Gaming and Technology / Developing Games
« on: Jan 19 2015, 06:40 PM »
In 2013 crowd funding models such as Kickstarter allowed for fans of games to contribute to the creation of games by backing projects, thus allowing to break the bad publisher trend which would like to throw out the same game year after year because people would buy it regardless of quality or ambition.

In this thread mention a games that have recently been developed through crowd funding or are currently in development.  Simply put these will be games that weren't funding directly by publishers.

Minecraft
http://www.minecraft.net/

It is an Inde development game by 'Notch' who has earned a large sum of money from all the participants who donated to try out his Alpha release of the game.  He received so much money that there was talk about Paypal seizing his Paypal account and alot of money was taken by Paypal never to be seen again by the developer (this story is arguable).

Anyway.. back to game discussion.
The game is popular because it is all "Procedural Generated" so nothing is the same each time you create a new world as it will be randomly generated each time.  What is also popular about the game is so ridiculously simple art style as the world is made up of blocks which are textured in pixels (some texture packs can make them look more detailed but..), its almost like lego how you can manipulate the world.

If you bunch a tree block you get a tree block in your inventory which you can then either plant anywhere like a lego block or put it into your crafting system and craft new items or blocks out of it.

To create a minecraft game or to buy the game (Its very small and is either digital download or you can run it straight from your browser since the game is made in Java)

http://www.minecraft.net/
_________

The game has 3 gamemodes.  Survival, Creative and Hardcore.  (and technically Adventure)

Survival - start on a server and start mining to craft better items to better yourself in the environment full of monsters trying to kill you.

Creative - Your inventory no longer shows what you carry, but its pretty much a store of every block in the game which you can place down.  Punching a block will instantly remove it so you can shape the world anyway you want.

Hardcore - A new gamemode which is Survival except if you die its perma-death so you won't respawn again.

*Adventure - Its a gamemode mentioned by the fan community as people make maps using modding tools and/or creative mode and then make up a story which you have to follow in survival mode.  It usually includes reading notes from signs or notepad documents along side the game so you can be immersed in a storyline.

Gaming and Technology / Touhou Project
« on: Apr 19 2012, 10:17 AM »
Touhou Project
http://en.touhouwiki.net/wiki/Touhou_Wiki

Touhou Project is a series of games which have best known to the world as the first "Bullet Hell" genre games as you have dodge projectiles with any hit causing death.
It uses the term 'Danmaku' which means Barrage of Spells as the series focuses on spellcards which your opponents fire at you; which you have to dodge successfully to capture them.

Most of the games are in Japanese but the fan community has provided english patches making it possible to play.
The fanon community for Touhou is insanely big because 'Zun' the sole creator of the series lets the fans decide what happens in the background as well as waiting for his judgement or works. (There is over 2TB of fanon works, excluding official games and works).

~ Any relation to Kitsune Paradise?  Its a world called Gensekyo located within the 'Great Hakuri Boundary' which was sealed by a Youkai named 'Yukari', inside the boundary lives a world full of Youkai.. one of the Youkai that lives there are Kitsune, Faries, Gods, Kappa, Tengu, Vampires.. the list could go on.  The main heroine character is a shrine maiden named 'Reimu' (Anti-hero because solving incidents only makes Youkai like her.. and scares away humans who could possibly donate to her shrine), followed by 'Marisa' who is an ordinary witch (clearly very sarcastic and perhaps insane like Jack Sparrow).

General Discussion / Re: Solutions for the unsleeping fox
« on: Apr 19 2012, 09:50 AM »
These are a few things I've found that work.

*Diet (You need energy to sleep so eating healthy will help),
*Sleep pattern (makes it easier each time - works well when you eat well),
*Exercise (Make yourself tired that your body forces you to fall asleep),
*Do something fun (You might be thinking too much before sleeping),
*Stay away from monitors late at night, at least 1 hour before bed (some studies show that this can affect people)
*Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea) or even fizzy drinks as alot of fizzy drinks contain caffeine.. and defiantly do not touch energy drinks because they are purposely made to try and keep you awake!

Arrived in Halls of Residence on Sunday.
Its been pretty cool and at the same time pretty lonely as I'm on a floor with returning students so they don't socialise much but are hard working in their rooms not wanting to be disturbed.

On a good note though, atleast its quiet where I am.  The first floor hasn't been able to sleep because the noise but on the top floor where I am its pretty quiet and we've had less vandalism/thefts.

Gaming and Technology / Re: wifi USB adapters
« on: Oct 02 2010, 04:17 PM »
I once got a wifi usb adapter but it doesn't support: Windows XP x64, Vista (any version), Win7 (any version).
Its kinda annoying setting up wifi for the DS because the original DS has limited wifi options while the DSi allows more wifi options which work with modern day security systems.

WEP is old, now days people use WPA-?? (? = wildcard for what ever version is new now).
There are also other types but I'm not sure what they're all called, I personally find wired connects easier to set up and maintain.

Looks like some kitsune woke up grumpy  ^_^

Like I said fun times.  I also left out the part where I jumped off a cliff, but people would misunderstand me then so I'll leave that discussion for another day  :)

Should be moving into Halls of Residence tomorrow which should be interesting.  I hear that its gale force winds, heavy rain and possibly thunder storm on the day I gotta drag my stuff up to my new room in halls.  Really sets a creepy theme  :)

I've returned to the forums too.  Since I haven't met you before I'll say hi.

Multimedia sounds interesting, I used to do CAD drawings in the past and make multimedia out of them.  Now I'm looking to be more ambitious and go into Engineering.

General Discussion / Symphony of Science

"Symphony of Science" is music based on science.  The most well known one is 'A Glorious Dawn' which has 4 million hits on Youtube and is being sold as a popular track on iTunes.

I came across this and though it was interesting so I've shared the links.  What do you think?

« on: Sep 28 2010, 12:06 PM »
Alot of things have happened since I was last on (back when I was in school).

Since then I've had a few events:
  • Found my eyes are messed up due to UV - got to wear blue glasses. o.o
  • Murder Investigation at my school - knew the involved. :(
  • Broken my ankle in several places - stair ads/twisting, landing full weight on it. >.>
  • I've learned most CAD packages (vector or engineering type) and Engineering course. :busy:
  • Just got into the University I wanted. (Science foundation - aiming to do Engineering after it) ^_^

Fun times  @_@
- no that isn't my life story, but I mentioned the points I'd of discussed on the forum had I of been here; figured its discussion if anybody feels interested in asking.

Introductions / Hi again
« on: Sep 28 2010, 03:56 AM »
Hi everybody.

I joined the forums in Jan 06, so its been a while since I saw the forums.
An update in my inbox reminded me of this place so I came back.  I left before because I thought the forum was inactive after a month of barely any discussion.

I must say there have been quite a few changes since I was last here.  :)

Paranormal / Talking about spirits
« on: Jun 09 2009, 11:19 AM »
Spirits, magic etc are dismissed by Science as what is not a fact is only fiction, however I still love to think and adapt to the impossible.

Spirit in my life?
Hmm its quite interesting story for me.. Okay let me begin.

1)
When I was younger I had quite long hair (ginger) and being younger I seemed to look femine according to loads of people.. (thats until you looked me in the face) - Anyway I aparently look and act just like my nan's mum.. I also have the same gene (only red-head) in my family like that.
I've freaked out my nan (I got up in the night and went to go look out the window in the moonlight because I thought it looked cool, I got caught for being up but instead of being told off I scared my nan for a second.. her thinking it was a young version of her mum).

So aparently the spirit of my great grandmother is with me?

2) I've had a few blackouts at school with no recollection of memories where I was or how I found myself injured.  After or during these incidents (during.. as in saying dreaming/unconcious) I saw a girl who I've seen about.. and yet I was at an all boys school. (I've been inspired by this and wrote a story on here about it once).

What is more interesting would you say?
The fact that I'm seen as my great grandmother or the fact that I've seen a girl who nobody can see after waking up after some nasty injuries. (btw. I'm fine.. Its what makes me dubious about the whole thing)
